With Klimatkompassen®, we at Tingstad, together with the research institute RISE, have produced the largest climate calculation for disposable items ever made. A simple climate tool so that you can easily compare, for example, paper cups, disposable cutlery, food packaging and get the answer to the question - What is the best option to for the climate?

For at vi alle, fra producenter til forbrugere, skal kunne ændre og gøre det rigtige på den måde, vores klode har brug for, skal det blive nemmere at vælge klimasmart. Derfor har vi sammen med RISE Instituttet udviklet Klimatkompassen® - et simpelt værktøj, der gør bæredygtighed mere forståelig og sammenlignelig.
Klimatkompassen® er et stort skridt i den rigtige retning, men betyder det, at vi er færdige? Langt fra. I dag forbruges og kasseres engangsmaterialer i en stadigt stigende hastighed. Samtidig stiger kravene til bæredygtige løsninger. Vores mål er at ændre vores egen forretning gennem klarhed og gennemsigtighed, men også rækkerne både foran og bag os. Med Klimatkompassen® ønsker vi at skabe et bæredygtigt system, hvor hele markedet har adgang til de beslutninger, der er truffet i tidligere faser, men også give en forståelse for, hvad beslutningerne betyder for enden af kæden.
Vi vet mycket om våra produkter, men det har saknats ett pålitligt sätt att svara på viktiga frågor: Vad är egentligen mest klimatsmart? Vilket material är bäst? Är närproducerat viktigare än fossilfri råvara? Hur påverkar återvinningsbarhet? Klimatkompassen® ger svar på dessa frågor och gör hållbarhetsbeslut enklare.
Vi vill göra hållbarhet tillgängligt och begripligt för alla, och Klimatkompassen® är vårt bidrag. Trots att frågorna är komplexa och har olika perspektiv, hindrar det oss inte från att ta steg mot en mer hållbar marknad. Ingen kan göra allt, men alla kan göra något. Together with RISE, we have identified the four most important climate categories:
The climate categories are weighted together through a weighting method that RISE has developed based on research and experience in sustainability, environmental analyzes and circular economy.
Klimatkompassen® takes the tempo of four very important environmental aspects – so called climate categories. Each category affects the climate differently, which the tool takes into account and indicates.
Depending on how well - or poorly - a product performs in the four categories, the tool calculates a total climate score. Klimatkompassen® shows the total score, but also visualizes how much the different climate categories affect in each individual product. In this way, you get a simple comparison figure, and at the same time an understanding of what lies behind the result.
The tool is not a life cycle analysis. In addition to the fact that such need to be made individually on each product, they are costly, time consuming and difficult to compare with each other. The goal of Klimatkompassen® was to create a sharp tool that makes it really easy to choose more sustainably, and which at the same time takes into account the most important climate categories. It was also crucial for us to find a model that can be applied to all our disposable products, so that the tool can generate as much benefit as possible for us, our customers and the rest of the market. Together with RISE, we have developed a model that is scientifically verified and comprehensive enough to make a real difference, while at the same time being simple enough to actually use.
The material is a climate category with a high impact. This simply means that products with a high proportion of renewable or recycled raw material play a significant role in the product's final climate score. Klimatkompassen® assesses the high proportion of renewable or recycled raw material that the product consists of. The higher the percentage, the higher the ecopoints.
How efficiently the product can be recycled back into new materials and products through recycling is another important climate aspect. Therefore, in Klimatkompassen® we have taken into account the unique properties of each material from a recycling point of view. In addition to this, it is also assessed what the availability of the existing collection system looks like for the material. But it does not fulfill any major climate benefit if the material is both collected and can be recycled if there is no aftermarket for the recycled material. In practice, this still results in landfill or incineration. Therefore, Klimatkompassen® also takes into account whether there is an aftermarket for the recycled material. The circularity of Klimatkompassen® has been assessed on the basis of Swedish conditions and systems.
The assessment is based on established carbon footprint data for transports, produced by RISE. Tingstad's import flows have been entered in the tool with regards to transport distance, type of transport, fuel type and load size. In practice, this means that well-optimized transport flows can have a relatively low carbon footprint, even if they are transported several kilometers. It is not a general value, but each product is assessed and scored according to Tingstad's unique import conditions for that particular product.
The type of energy used in production plays a major role. Renewable electricity as wind power has a lower carbon footprint than fossil energy as coal power. The tool takes into account the type of energy that has been used in production. An extensive data from RISE with different countries' electricity mix and carbon footprint is the basis for this assessment.
The product's performance in each of the four climate categories, weighted against how heavy each category weighs, is compiled into a final value. This value is presented on a scale of 1-5, where 1 is the lowest sustainability score and 5 is the highest. Klimatkompassen® then visualizes the value of each product in a simple way that makes it easy to compare all products that have been assessed using the tool.
