The clips are made from up to 60% recycled steel and have a zinc-coated, shiny silver surface that is nickel-free. The steel wire under the coated surface contains nickel, which means that an extremely nickel-sensitive person may react if there is a scratch in the coating or if the ends of the clip are touched. (This is how most paperclips on the market are made; it is rare for them to be made from solid zinc wire).
