Which Mechanical Pencil Should You Choose?

Mechanical pencils, sometimes called propelling pencils, work much like traditional pencils but do not need sharpening. When the lead runs out, you simply refill it with new pencil leads. This makes them a practical choice for note-taking, sketching, and drawing.

The most important factor when choosing a mechanical pencil is the lead size you want to use.

0.5 mm or 0.7 mm Mechanical Pencil?

  • 0.5 mm: Produces fine lines and is ideal for small notes, technical drawings, and detailed work.
  • 0.7 mm: Produces slightly wider lines and is well suited for everyday writing. The thicker leads are also less likely to break.
  • Thicker leads, such as 2–3 mm: Often used for sketching and drawing where you want to vary the line width. Some models may require a dedicated lead sharpener.

For everyday office work, both 0.5 mm and 0.7 mm are good options. Choose the size that feels most comfortable for your writing style.

Pencil Leads in Different Hardness Grades

Like traditional pencils, mechanical pencil leads are available in different hardness grades. The hardness affects how light or dark the writing appears.

  • H – Hard leads: Produce lighter lines and are suitable for fine line work and detailed drawings.
  • HB – For everyday writing: A versatile all-round choice for notes, schoolwork, and office use.
  • B – Soft leads: Produce darker lines and are often used for drawing and sketching.

The higher the H number, the harder the lead. The higher the B number, the softer and usually darker the lead becomes.

Refilling Your Mechanical Pencil

When buying replacement leads, the most important thing is to make sure they match the pencil's lead size. For example, a 0.5 mm mechanical pencil must be refilled with 0.5 mm leads.

You can, however, choose different hardness grades within the same lead size depending on your writing or drawing preferences. Be sure to check your pencil's specifications before ordering.
