What is SBTi?

SBTi, the Science Based Targets initiative, is a framework that companies can use to set science-based climate targets. The targets describe how the company plans to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions over time, based on what climate science shows is required.

SBTi is a collaboration between CDP, the UN Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

The purpose is to make corporate climate targets more concrete, comparable and possible to follow up.

Tingstad's validated climate targets

AB Tingstad Papper has had the following near-term science-based targets validated by SBTi Services:

“AB Tingstad Papper commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 63% by 2035 from a 2024 base year.”

This means that Tingstad has committed to reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 emissions by 63% by 2035, using 2024 as the base year.

“AB Tingstad Papper also commits that 76% of its suppliers by emissions covering purchased goods and services, will have science-based targets by 2031.”

Tingstad has also committed that 76% of our suppliers, calculated based on emissions linked to purchased goods and services, will have their own science-based targets by 2031.

What do scope 1, 2 and 3 mean?

Climate emissions are often divided into three areas, known as “scopes”, according to the GHG Protocol, which is the world’s most widely used standard for calculating and reporting greenhouse gas emissions.

Scope 1 refers to direct emissions from the company’s own operations, such as its own vehicles or facilities.

Scope 2 refers to indirect emissions from purchased energy, such as electricity, heating and cooling.

Scope 3 refers to other indirect emissions in the value chain, for example purchased goods, transport and other upstream and downstream emissions.

Why is this important?

Our environmental and climate work is managed according to ISO 14001. This means that we identify relevant environmental impacts, set targets and work to continuously improve ourselves.

For Tingstad, the validation is therefore an important milestone in our sustainability work. It gives us a clear direction for how we should reduce the climate impact of our own operations and how we should continue working together with our suppliers.

Since a large share of the climate impact in a trading business arises in the value chain, Scope 3, the supplier stage is a very central part of the work.

What happens now?

The validation of the targets is not the end point, but the start of continued structured work. Tingstad will continue working to reduce emissions over time, follow up on progress and maintain a dialogue with suppliers regarding their climate targets.

The work includes areas such as energy, transport, purchasing and collaboration with suppliers.

Timeline illustrating Tingstad's continued climate work

By setting science-based climate targets, Tingstad is taking further steps in its work to reduce climate impact. The targets give us a clear direction going forward and strengthen our work towards a more sustainable value chain.
