Which Pencil Should You Choose?

For everyday note-taking and writing, an HB pencil is a good choice. It produces clear writing without the graphite being too soft. If you plan to draw, sketch, or make more detailed markings, it may be worth choosing a different hardness grade.

The Difference Between H, HB, and B

Pencils are available in different hardness grades. The letters indicate how hard the graphite is and how dark the lines will be.

• H – Hard graphite: Produces lighter lines and is suitable for fine details, technical drawings, and precise line work. The higher the H number, the harder the graphite.
• HB – For everyday writing: A versatile all-round option for notes, forms, and handwritten documents.
• B – Soft graphite: Produces darker lines and is well suited for drawing, sketching, and shading. The higher the B number, the softer the graphite.

Pencils With or Without an Eraser

A pencil with an eraser on the end is practical when you want to make corrections immediately. It is particularly useful for note-taking, planning, and writing tasks where information may change.

For drawing and sketching, a pencil without an eraser can be just as suitable, especially if you already use a separate eraser.
