Fire Extinguishers for Different Fire Risks

Fire extinguishers contain different extinguishing agents and should be selected according to the fire risks and environment of the business. Always compare the product's fire rating, performance rating, size, temperature range, and certifications before ordering.

Where fire risks are mixed or difficult to assess, the requirements, placement, and choice of fire extinguisher should be evaluated by a qualified professional.

Powder Fire Extinguishers

ABC powder extinguishers are a versatile option for businesses where several types of fire risks may occur. Powder provides high extinguishing capacity and can be used for the fire classes specified on the product.

Keep in mind that the powder spreads during use and may require extensive cleaning afterwards. Always consider both the fire rating and the environment where the extinguisher will be installed.

CO₂ Fire Extinguishers

Carbon dioxide fire extinguishers, also known as CO₂ extinguishers, leave no residue and can be suitable in environments where equipment is sensitive to contamination, such as certain electrical and technical installations.

They are typically intended for Class B fires and have limited effectiveness on materials that continue to smoulder. Always check the extinguisher's markings and intended use.

Water and Water-Based Fire Extinguishers

Water-based extinguishers are primarily used for Class A fires, such as fires involving wood, paper, and textiles. Depending on the extinguishing agent and product classification, some models may also be suitable for additional fire risks.

They may be appropriate for offices, retail premises, schools, and similar environments where the risk profile matches the product classification. Always check the markings before using a fire extinguisher near electrical equipment.

Wet Chemical Fire Extinguishers

Wet chemical fire extinguishers are designed for Class F fires involving cooking oils and fats. They are particularly relevant for restaurants, commercial kitchens, and other environments where deep fryers or heated cooking oils are present.

Never use water on burning cooking oil or deep-frying oil. Choose a fire extinguisher with the appropriate fire rating for the identified risk.

What Does the Fire Rating Mean?

The fire rating indicates the type of fire for which the extinguisher is intended:

  • A – fires involving solid materials such as wood, paper, and textiles
  • B – fires involving flammable liquids and substances that can become liquid
  • C – fires involving flammable gases
  • F – fires involving cooking oils and fats

A fire extinguisher may be rated for several fire types, such as ABC or AF. Each product page provides information about the fire rating, performance rating, and other specifications.

Electrical equipment does not have its own fire classification. Always review the information and markings on the extinguisher before using it in environments containing electrical equipment.

Consider the Performance Rating

The fire rating indicates the type of fire the extinguisher is intended for, while the performance rating indicates the tested extinguishing performance for certain fire classes. Two extinguishers using the same extinguishing agent may therefore have different extinguishing capacities.

Compare the fire rating, performance rating, and extinguishing agent quantity when choosing between different models.
