Which type of dishwasher detergent should I choose?

To find the right product, you need to base your choice on your machine type and equipment:

• Liquid Machine Detergent (Canister): The most common solution for professional dishwashers. The canister connects to the machine’s dosing pump via a tube. Available from 5L up to 200L.
• Detergent Systems (Blocks & Cartridges): Highly concentrated products for specific dosing systems (e.g. Ecolab Solid, Diversey Revoflow or Tingstad Fast). These require a dedicated wall-mounted dispenser. The advantage is high safety and precise dosing.
• Tablets & Powders: Best suited for smaller undercounter machines in offices, cafés or small kitchens where dosing is done manually for each wash.
• Granules: Small plastic or bio-based beads used in granule dishwashers (e.g. Granuldisk) to blast away burnt-on food from GN containers and pots.

Water hardness and materials

Don’t forget to consider your water and what you are washing:

• Hard water: Choose a detergent designed for hard water (often labelled “Lime” or “H”). This prevents limescale buildup inside the machine.
• Aluminium: Washing baking sheets or pots made of aluminium? Then you must use a specialised detergent (e.g. Alu or Metal Protection). Regular machine detergent is caustic and will damage aluminium instantly.

Don’t forget the salt! If you have hard water, most machines require salt for the softener to function properly.
