How to use a glass scraper safely
Scraping glass requires proper technique to avoid scratches. The basic rule is simple: Never scrape on dry glass.
- Soak thoroughly: The glass must be covered with soapy water that acts as a lubricant.
- Forward only: Push the scraper forward in a smooth motion. Never pull it backward toward you, as dirt may drag across the surface and scratch the glass.
- The angle: Keep the scraper at a low angle to the glass.
- Check the blade: A damaged or rusty blade is the most common cause of scratches. Replace blades often!
Choose the right blade: Stainless or Carbon Steel?
We offer replacement blades in two main materials:
- Carbon Steel: Extremely sharp and often slightly cheaper. The downside is that they rust quickly if left damp. Best suited for single‑use jobs or if you replace blades daily.
- Stainless Steel: A slightly softer metal but far more resistant to rust. The perfect choice for daily maintenance where the scraper stays in your belt for longer periods.
Warning about tempered glass: Be extremely careful when scraping tempered glass (often marked “Tempered”). Tempered glass may have microscopic high spots that can break off and scratch the pane if you scrape over them. Always test‑scrape in a corner first.
Frequently asked questions about glass scrapers
Can you use a glass scraper on tinted windows?
No, never! Tinted windows usually have a plastic film on the inside. Using a razor scraper on the film will cut it instantly. Scrapers should only be used on bare glass.
How do you change a blade safely?
Most professional scrapers have a click mechanism or screw that lets you change the blade without touching the sharp edge. Always use the protective cover when the scraper is not in use.
Does the scraper remove limescale?
A scraper can remove thick limescale deposits, but “grey haze” from limescale or etching usually requires chemical treatment with an acidic cleaner.
