The Cloth – For the Final Finish (Detailing)

In professional window cleaning, the cloth is mainly used for “detailing” – drying frames, corners and the rubber blade of the squeegee.

  • Microfiber: The modern choice for window cleaners. A professional microfiber cloth (e.g. from Unger or Vikan) has excellent absorption and leaves no lint on the glass. The static charge in a dry cloth also attracts dust particles.
  • Different textures: Some cloths are smooth for polishing, while others have a waffle structure or a rougher surface to absorb more water and dirt from window sills.

Gloves for Professionals – Grip and Warmth

Working with water and detergent makes tools slippery. A pair of good window cleaning gloves is cheap insurance against dropped tools and cold hands.

  • Neoprene: The same material used in wetsuits. Neoprene gloves are the best choice for window cleaning because they warm up from your body heat even when wet. They also have a rubberised surface that provides a “sticky” grip on slippery aluminium poles.
  • Protection: Gloves also protect the skin from drying out due to detergents and from cuts caused by sharp edges on channels and blades.

Microfiber care tip: To maintain the cloth’s absorption capacity, it must be washed correctly. Never use fabric softener! It coats the fibres and makes the cloth push water around instead of absorbing it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Window Cloths

Why do I get streaks when wiping with my cloth?

This is usually because the cloth is saturated (too wet) or has been washed with fabric softener. It can also happen if you try to wipe the entire window with the cloth – professionals use the squeegee for 95% of the surface.

Are window cleaning gloves waterproof?

Neoprene gloves are waterproof in the material itself, but during long work sessions hands may get moist from sweat. Their main advantage is that they keep warmth even when wet and provide excellent grip.

How many cloths do I need?

A common rule is to have one cloth for “rough” work (rubber blade and dirty sills) and one clean cloth for “fine” work (polishing the glass and corners). Switch to a dry cloth as soon as it feels damp.
