Paper Napkins.
Guide: How to Choose the Right Napkin Quality
Choosing the right napkin is about matching the feel of the napkin with the food you serve and your budget.
What is the difference between Tissue and Airlaid (Linen Feel)?
It comes down to the material’s thickness and absorbency:
-
Tissue (Paper): The classic napkin made from several thin layers (usually 2-ply or 3-ply). An affordable choice for lunch service, cafés and breakfast.
-
Airlaid (Linen Feel): A heavier, fabric-like material made from airlaid paper fibers. These napkins are extremely absorbent and easy to fold into elegant shapes. Perfect for dinner service, weddings and events where you want the feel of fabric but the hygiene of a disposable product.
Which fold should I choose? (1/4 vs 1/8)
The fold determines how the napkin is delivered and how quickly you can set the table:
-
1/4 fold: The most common square napkin. You unfold it once before placing it in the lap. Best if you want to make your own napkin foldings (e.g. “fan fold”).
-
1/8 fold (Cutlery Napkin): Pre-folded lengthwise, often rectangular. Ideal for quickly placing cutlery on the napkin without extra work. Saves time in service.
Why choose dispenser napkins?
For fast-food restaurants, cafés and ice cream stands, a napkin dispenser is the most economical option. The system dispenses one napkin at a time, reducing consumption by up to 25% compared to loose stacked napkins. It is also more hygienic since the guest only touches the napkin they will use.
Frequently Asked Questions About Napkins
For a standard lunch, 1–2 napkins per person are usually sufficient, while you should plan for 2–3 napkins per person for dinner or buffet service. For larger events such as weddings or conferences, we recommend 3–4 napkins per guest to be on the safe side. Also make sure to have extra napkins available at serving stations or in dispensers for guests who may need more.
The difference lies in thickness and absorbency. 2-ply napkins consist of two thin paper layers and are the most cost-effective option for cafés, fast-food restaurants, and everyday service. 3-ply napkins have an extra layer, making them thicker, softer, and more absorbent – perfect for restaurants, hotels, and occasions where you want to create a more premium impression.
The choice of size depends on the serving situation. 33x33 cm is the standard size for lunch and casual dining. 40x40 cm is better suited for dinner service and fine dining, as it provides more lap coverage. For dispenser napkins, 17x17 cm or 20x20 cm is optimal. For more luxurious table settings with cutlery, we recommend 40x40 cm or 48x48 cm in Airlaid quality.
Yes, we offer a wide range of eco-labelled napkins. Many of our napkins are FSC-certified, ensuring the paper comes from sustainable forestry. We also offer PEFC-certified options and napkins made from recycled materials. Airlaid napkins are also biodegradable.
Airlaid is a premium quality disposable napkin that feels almost like real linen. The material is produced by air-laying fibers, creating a thick, soft, and highly absorbent napkin with a fabric-like texture. “Linen feel” is the common term for this quality. Perfect for fine dining, events, and napkin folding.
