Choose a High-Visibility Jacket by Class and Protection Requirements

EN ISO 20471 specifies requirements for high-visibility clothing, including the amount and placement of fluorescent and retroreflective materials. The standard includes three classes, with Class 3 providing the highest level of visibility. The required class should be determined by the risk assessment for the specific work environment.

Always check the classification for the size being ordered. On some jackets, the visibility class changes depending on garment size because the amount of visibility material varies. For example, Blåkläder 4987 is classified as both Class 2 and Class 3 depending on size, and the same principle applies to several models in the range.

If the workplace requires additional protection, those certifications must also be verified separately. EN ISO 20471 covers visibility and does not replace standards for rain protection, cold protection, flame resistance, or arc flash protection.

Choose Jacket Type According to Weather and Work Tasks

Different types of high-visibility jackets are designed for different working conditions. Softshell jackets can be suitable when freedom of movement and a more flexible outer garment are priorities, but the level of wind and water protection varies between models.

Shell jackets are used when weather protection and layering capability are important. Check whether the model is certified according to EN 343 when protection against rain and adverse weather is required. Blåkläder 4987, for example, is certified according to both EN ISO 20471 and EN 343.

For colder working environments, winter jackets and parkas are available with different types of insulation. If certified cold protection is required, check the applicable standards; some models are certified according to EN 342.

The range also includes fleece jackets and other lighter high-visibility garments for situations with lower insulation requirements or as part of a layered clothing system.

Flame Protection and Other Combined Protection Features

Some high-visibility jackets combine enhanced visibility with additional protective properties. A flame-resistant multinorm jacket may be certified for several risks simultaneously, such as heat and flame, electrostatic properties, or thermal hazards from electric arc exposure. Blåkläder 4069 is one example, with certifications including EN ISO 20471, EN ISO 11612, EN 1149-5, and IEC 61482.

Do not choose a multinorm or flame-resistant model based solely on its product name. Always verify the standards and protection levels applicable to the jacket and ensure they match the workplace risk assessment.

Fit, Size, and Features

Once the correct protection level and jacket type have been established, compare fit and practical features. The assortment includes men's and women's models as well as jackets with stretch panels, adjustable hems, extended backs, various pocket solutions, and other work-oriented details.

Consider how the jacket will be used together with mid-layers or other protective garments. Also check the washing and care instructions for the selected model to ensure it is maintained according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
